In-Sight Quest For Teens brings together an eclectic group of youth from different sociogeographic regions of North America. The program focuses on helping students develop skills associated with leadership dynamics through building self-confidence, cooperative responsible attitudes and stewardship for the planet based on social and ecological sustainability. Three principle disciplines engage students in: skills based certification, life skills coaching, and nature discovery and awareness building.
Outdoor Skills Certification :
Animal Husbandry & Rehabbing Critters: Make the
connection, share the love (15 hrs)
Students are introduced to and connect with our husky sled dogs, horses,
and birds of prey through animal care and conditioning. ISES’s provincially
licensed wild animal rehabilitation facilities also provide students with
rare opportunities to care for wild orphaned critters such as baby raccoons,
squirrels, bear cubs, and fawns.
Basic Lake Water Paddler: Learn the skills, be the guide (15 hrs)
Through this course certified by *RCABC students learn flat water
canoe paddler skills: Basic tandem (1), basic solo (2) and advanced tandem
(3). Paddlers also embark on a three wilderness canoe trip to the crystal-clear
waters of 31-Mile Lake. Shore line exploration, fishing, seeking ‘jumping
rocks’, R & R and
awesome food highlight this trip.
Basic Wilderness First Aid: Be prepared, save a life (15 hrs)
This skills-based course represents the minimum standard of training
in wilderness first aid for outdoor enthusiasts and is ideal for students
who seek employment in outdoor adventure recreation and/or want to develop
their personal portfolios. This two day course combines theory and practical
applications.
Life Skills Coaching
Life Mapping & Positive Peer Dynamics: Hold the
compass, support the group (10 hrs)
Through daily meetings or activities professional life-skills coaching
will engage
students in goal setting exercises and motivational discussions aimed
at helping participants better define their visions within an environmentally
sustainable world.
7-Habits of Highly Effective Teens: Be the example, be the leader (10
hrs)
Principals of “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens” by Sean
Covey are also applied providing a step-by-step guide to helping
teens improve self-image, build friendships, resist peer pressure, achieve
goals and get along better with their parents.
Introduction to Journal Writing: Live the moment, record the memory (10
hrs)
Through daily entries students are encouraged to capture their special
ISES thoughts and moments through journal writing. Participants also gain
an appreciation for journaling as it applies to career interests where
field notes or log entries are required.
Nature Discovery and Awareness Building Themes
Custodians of the Land: Embrace Earth Mother, feel the Spirit (10 hrs)
Students are introduced to a Medicine Wheel garden - a sacred area where
a variety of medicinal plants for human and animal use are grown. They
learn and discuss the holistic benefits of organic foods and the healing
powers of natural remedies. Students are also taught a variety of indigenous
wild edible plants and learn basic homeopathy as it applies to animal
husbandry.
The James Bay Experience: Discovering the north, sharing of cultures
(7 days)
Students venture north for a week filled with discovery through
visiting the town of Radisson and “LG2” - one of the more famous
hydro electric dams of the Hydro Quebec system - the Cree Nation community
of Chisasibi and historic Fort George on the shores of James Bay. Exploring
this wilderness paradise in a motorized Hudson Bay freighter canoe, fossil
hunting and evening fireside story-telling are trip highlights.
