Program Focus:
Personal Portfolio Building is ideal for young adults wishing to initiate and/or develop personal portfolios involving animal husbandry and outdoor adventure recreation . Also highlighted are individualized life skills coaching and nature discovery themes.
Program Outline:
Skills Based Development (30 hrs)
Animal Husbandry: Students are introduced to the care and connection of horses, sled dogs & raptors, and engage in specific activities involving the rehabilitation of wild animals (i.e. raptors, bear cubs, raccoons, squirrels, etc.).
Outdoor Adventure Recreation (seasonal): Students learn and/or develop outdoor adventure recreation skills associated with hiking, flat water canoeing, wilderness canoe tripping, dog carting, dog sledding, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing.
Skills Based Certification (32-40 hrs)
Students develop their personal portfolios by gaining certification in animal husbandry or outdoor adventure recreation through engaging in one (1) of the following programs:
- Introduction to Animal Husbandry (40 hrs)
- Introduction to Dog Kennel Maintenance & Dog Sledding (40 hrs)
- Basic & Advanced Lake Water Paddlers - Levels 1-4 (40 hrs)
- Advanced Wilderness First Aid (32 hrs)
Life Skills Coaching (20 hrs)
Be the Example - Being the Leader: Students develop personal life skills through facilitated sessions involving life mapping, goal setting, journal writing and group dynamics.
Nature Discovery Themes (20 hrs)
Stepping Into Nature: Students gain basic wilderness survival skills through indigenous medicinal and edible plant identification, basic GPS practice, map & compass exercises, and 'low impact' camping experience.
