Skills Based Development
Digital Photography & File Manipulation
Capture an image, tell a story (15 hrs)
Our digital photography course emphasizes photo composition and file manipulation.
Basic camera skills and terminology are introduced and students learn how
to approach outdoor photography as it applies to lighting conditions and
environmental factors.
Animals and Literature
Developing ecocritical thinking (20 hrs)
This course focuses on animals in contemporary fiction and non-fiction, poetry and prose. The reading list, structured according to roles animals play in human society, includes short stories, personal essays, novel excerpts, academic articles, song lyrics, and children’s books. We will examine these writings from various ecocritical angles, looking at, for example, how animals are represented in the texts, how they influence people and the social order, and implications for human-nature relationships in contemporary society. Writing activities will include pre-writing exercises, journaling for personal and research purposes, two short assignments, and a final personal writing challenge.
